This course uses a remote proctor service

Supervised clinical experience in microbiology. Proctor fee.
At the successful completion of this rotation, the student will be able to:

___ 1. Inoculate specimens.

2. Discuss media specificity and its application to different specimen types.

3. Make smears and perform staining techniques.

___ 4. Evaluate Gram stained smears.

5. Discuss normal and pathogenic organisms expected in clinical cultures.

6. Correlate colonial morphology with microscopic morphology.

7. Perform biochemical tests on organisms following protocols.

8. Correlate the theory and use of individual biochemical tests.

9. Recognize different colonial morphology and to order appropriate biochemical tests when necessary.

10. Identify organisms by their biochemical reactions and order appropriate follow-up tests.

11. Read antibiotic sensitivity tests and to recognize key organism patterns.

___ 12. Identify the most likely sources of errors and to take corrective action.

13. Recognize critical values and respond accordingly.

14. Perform antibiotic susceptibility testing.

___ 15. Perform molecular techniques.

___ 16. Prioritize and organize workload.
