Integration of educational theory, pedagogy, and practice; classroom discourse, group discussions, disciplinary thinking, questioning, models of cognition, metacognition, formative assessment, classroom presence. For students serving as learning assistants in large-enrollment undergraduate science courses.
As a result of successfully completing this course, students will be able to: • Practice drawing on learners’ ideas, thinking, and intuitive knowledge • Develop experience with formative assessment in the discipline • Synthesize classroom experiences with research on learning, teaching, and studies of science.

The topics may be of interest to students in other STEM programs, and the emphasis is on specific areas of interest to students in STEM research and education. No other course at GW combines those two aspects.
Course Attribute

For the GWTeach program, this course will allow students to get teaching experience in the undergraduate classroom as a Learning Assistant. Another purpose is to support the Minor in STEM Teaching by allowing students to combine the two-credit LA Pedagogy course with a one-credit topics course as an option for completing 3 credits toward the Minor.
