Diagnostic analyses used to evaluate disease states associated with human blood cells. Emphasis on quality assurance in the hematology laboratory and on the evaluation of stained blood smears and microscopic differentiation of blood cells.
Upon successful completion of this course, the learner will be able to: 1. Follow laboratory safety precautions consistently 2. Explain the principle of each procedure performed 3. Discuss the specimen requirements and determine specimen acceptability for each procedure 4. Perform diagnostic laboratory procedures on blood accurately 5. Interpret test results and quality control data as they relate to human blood cells 6. Compare test results with appropriate reference ranges 7. Recognize pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical errors 8. Describe technical or clinical factors that may affect blood test results 9. Correlate hematology test results to disease states 10. Discuss the principles of the procedures of each laboratory test performed, including: a. Manual reticulocyte counting b. ESR test c. Manual hematocrit test d. Manual WBC count/hemacytometer 11. Calculate a corrected white count, based on the number of NRBC seen on the smear 12. Compare the RBC and WBC indices to observed cell morphology and distribution

This is a hands-on lab course that will be taught at the same time as the MLS 4128 Hematology I online, didactic course in the blended MLS program.
