This seminar examines critical interventions into the theories, rhetorics, and practices of freedom. It will focus on the politics of freedom in relation to an array of themes that may include liberalism, slavery, imperialism, political economy, individualism, and neoliberalism.
LEARNING GOALS: 1) To develop knowledge of central texts, questions and thinkers in 20th and 21st century critical theories of freedom. 2) To learn to both analyze and critique theoretical material in a careful and sustained fashion. 3) To practice the art of critical-theoretical analysis upon written texts, social practices, political events and cultural products
