Supervised clinical experience for students in the Clinical Exercise Physiology program. Working with clinical patient populations in hospitals in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, students observe and participate in the assessment and treatment of patients with a variety of chronic diseases.
1. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology of coronary heart disease and other selected chronic diseases and conditions. 2. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the role of exercise training and regular physical activity in the medical management and secondary prevention of these chronic diseases and conditions. 3. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of risk factors for these diseases and how to reduce risk through lifestyle changes. 4. Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to perform various clinical assessments and be able to process the data from such assessments as part of a comprehensive patient assessment. 5. Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to develop safe and effective exercise prescriptions and supervise exercise training sessions. 6. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of current laws and health insurance rules that regulate how cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs can provide services to patients.
