Basic pathophysiology in select chronic diseases. Application of clinical exercise testing and assessment and effects of acute and chronic exercise and exercise prescription on affected patients. Patient groups include children and the elderly, and individuals with pulmonary diseases, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, peripheral artery disease, stroke, obesity, spinal cord injury, cancer.
1. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the pathophysiology of coronary heart disease and other selected chronic diseases and conditions. 2. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the role of exercise training and regular physical activity in the medical management and secondary prevention of these chronic diseases and conditions. 3. Students will demonstrate knowledge and understanding of risk factors for these diseases and how to reduce risk through lifestyle changes. 4. Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills required to develop safe and effective exercise prescriptions and supervise exercise training sessions.
