Presentation and discussion of issues including social determinants of health, cultural competency, ethical principles, epidemiology, and patient safety. A related community service component is included in PA 6119.
Course Goals
1. Develop a framework for the practice of medicine focusing on the patient, family, community, and society at large.
2. Discuss the interaction between social, behavioral, cultural, environmental and economic factors in both individual and population health.
3. Apply epidemiologic concepts in relation to social, cultural, environmental and economic factors involved in both individual and population health.
4. Apply ethical principles to clinical cases.
5. Discuss elements of quality care and patient safety in specific clinical cases.
