The Humanities course at the Corcoran is a required two-semester survey (CAS 2000 and CAS 2010) of works of literature, philosophy and social theory, and of the ideas that give them enduring value. The goal of this course is to provide thoughtful training in the methods of the humanities employed in all college work and in investigating ideas, books, and art: close reading and interpretation of texts, exchange of ideas in discussion, and persuasive critical writing. Works of central importance from world cultural traditions are studied, focusing on a topic of universal and contemporary significance, as a model for the personally motivated intellectual inquiry that defines and enhances the careers of artists, designers, and independent thinkers. Topics by section each semester it is offered.
