Women’s position in Chinese cultural and political life from prehistoric myth to the present time. Includes a significant engagement in writing as a form of critical inquiry and scholarly expression to satisfy the WID requirement.
At the end of the semester students should: • be able to analyze the aesthetic and stylistic features of literary works and films about Chinese women, and to demonstrate understanding of the relationship between a work and its cultural context. • be able to describe and illustrate modern and contemporary Chinese cultural and ethical values and evaluate their significance in a global, comparative context. • develop the ability to conduct independent research, including the ability to locate primary and secondary sources; to read scholarly works with critical eye, to pose meaningful questions, form a thesis, gather evidence, and provide persuasive arguments by analyzing texts and other evidence.
