Explanation of how the course differs from similar GW courses
This is an upper-level special topics course that will be offered by department faculty on a rotating basis.
The PHIL 3100 course we are proposing will not necessarily be for a cross-listed course although the sample Spring 2015 syllabus from Derek Malone-France is for one selected topic, Religion and Political Dissent, which will be cross-listed with REL 3990W: Selected Topics in Religion. Derek is an affiliated faculty member with Philosophy and asked for some of his courses to be cross-listed with Philosophy. Religion has agreed to do this so we didn't anticipate it being a problem. We wanted a new PHIL 3100 Selected Toics on the books because we anticipate other faculty, including our Honors/Phil faculty, using this designation as well for upper-level philosophy courses they are teaching on new topics.

Rollback: How can a topics course be cross-listed? Might not one of the departments want to post its own "selected topic" that would not necessarily be appropriate for the other department? This proposal steals REL 3990 out from under the religion department.
