The consideration of gender and sex as organizing principles of social relations. Analysis of the dynamics of inequality in such areas as families, the workforce, culture and mass media, politics, sexual relationships, law medicine, religion, and education.
As a result of taking this course students should be able to: • distinguish between sex and gender, • analyze how sex and gender are intertwined, • debunk and inform common understandings of the permanence of gender and sex, • identify and advocate for gender-related topics of interest, • cogently discuss gender issues in writing and in person, • critique others’ analyses of gender, • read current events through the lens of research-based understandings of the issues, • successfully work together in a group to achieve a stated aim, • design a project and carry it through, • gather data and information from relevant sources, • communicate appropriately and effectively with the community on a gender-related issue, • make a formal presentation to peers on a semester-long group project.
