Main philosophy for protection of power systems. Protection systems and approaches; reliability and security of protection systems; protection of generators, transformers, motors and transmission lines; requirements for distributed source generation (DSG); and requirements for system protection to prevent grid blackouts and enhance power system security.
Students will be able to apply accepted standard procedures for protection of electrical power circuits at transmission, distribution and utilization voltage levels; be aware of the grounding requirements for safety requirements; assist in developing, designing and maintaining plant protection both for existing plant and for planning of future plant developments; ensure the safety of personnel and equipment both in terms of grounding and lifetime extension of plant; and ensure the safe operation of electrical systems both during normal and abnormal circumstances.
