Explanation of how the course differs from similar GW courses
The faculty members of the Department of Fine Arts and Art History would like to create a new course titled Seminar: Special Topics in Art History.
We currently offer seminars for junior and senior Art History majors in different areas of Art History (Seminar in Medieval Art and Architecture, Seminar in Renaissance Art and Architecture, Seminar in Baroque Art and Architecture, Seminar in Modern European Art and Architecture, and Seminar in American Art and Architecture). As these are special topics courses, the instructor of the seminar creates a specific course topic in one of those areas. For example, last fall we offered two undergraduate seminars: Seminar in Renaissance Art and Architecture (section title Florence in the Age of the Medici) and Seminar in Medieval Art and Architecture (section title Naissance of Christian Art and Architecture).
However, occasionally a course we want to offer doesn’t fit into any of the current seminar categories. The syllabus included in this packet is for a course, Photography around Africa, which is an example of a course that would work well as a Special Topics in Art History course.
Please make sure this course is coded as a special topics course so we will be able to change the section title.
