Techniques for designing and conducting qualitative research and for analyzing and reporting qualitative data relevant to program development and implementation, community assessment, and policy analysis.
Course Learning Objectives: The course will provide advanced knowledge and skills for critical decision making in the design and implementation of qualitative health and health care research. It will provide both intellectual grounding in theory and the approaches to qualitative research as well as the practical tools of field research for public health and health care research. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: • Define and describe different research approaches and methodologies used in qualitative studies • Develop and frame qualitative research questions • Design and conduct rigorous approaches to qualitative studies • Evaluate the assumptions, strengths and weaknesses of selected qualitative traditions, including data generation and analytical methods • Understand the culture of ethical standards of conduct in the research process and within organizations and communities • Understand and overcome the challenges of qualitative research and successfully complete field research for qualitative studies
