Students develop a briefing on health and health care for a new governor and health secretary in order to gain a practical understanding of state health policy and programs. The course is designed to replicate the experience of a newly hired policy staff member learning the requirements for the position in a particular state.
Upon completion of the course, students will be able to: – Understand the dynamics of state legislative and administrative processes in context of state health policy – Apply state health care policy concepts within the context of the roles and tools of different actors in the various stages of the process – Relate to and use various decision making methodologies to “move the marker” on improving health care within the context of state government – Understand and evaluate the substance and strategies around major state health policy change
