Exploration of the therapist’s heritage, expectations, worldview and values; racial/cultural identity development; skills for multicultural counseling. Stereotypes and biases that interfere with effective treatment of culturally different clients. The role of the art therapist or counselor in conflict resolution, advocacy, and social justice. May be repeated for credit if taken through the study abroad course option.
In alignment with the Art Therapy Program Goals and Learning Outcomes, as a result of this course: • Students will have a broad knowledge of foundational approaches and theories of art therapy and counseling as evidenced by the completion of both weekly and semester assignments. As a result of completing this course, students will be able to: 1. Self-Awareness: Understand the effects of one’s racial and cultural attitudes, beliefs, and worldviews as it effects the therapeutic relationship; 2. Knowledge: Gain knowledge of specific racial, cultural and social populations; Become aware of the implications of cross-racial and cross-cultural relationships in art therapy, counseling, and therapy settings; 3. Skills: Develop skills to effectively engage in cross-racial and cross-cultural therapeutic relationships
