Tensor analysis; fundamental concepts of continuum mechanics; kinematics of continuum; derivation of balance laws of mass, linear momentum, angular momentum, energy and entropy; axioms of constitutive theory; formulation of constitutive theories; Onsager’s principle; objectivity; representation theorem for isotropic functions; plasticity, including concepts of internal variables, yield surface, return mapping algorithm. Permission of the department required prior to enrollment.
1) Understand tensor analysis and concepts of continuum mechanics 2) Derive the balance laws of mass, linear and angular momenta, energy, and entropy 3) Formulate constitutive theories for various kinds of solids and fluids based on the axiomatic approach 4) Apply the principles and applications of objectivity and representation theorem for isotropic functions
