Basic life sciences crucial to environmental issues, including biology, ecology, environmental health and toxicology, epidemiology, and agriculture; biodiversity, ecosystem services, habitat preservation, deforestation, conservation biology, nutrient cycling, and the impacts of climate change on living systems.
• Demonstrate a basic understanding of the primary life science disciplines relevant to environmental issues (i.e. biology, ecology, environmental health and toxicology, epidemiology, and agriculture) and to understand how principles in these disciplines collectively govern the natural behavior of earth’s biosphere. • To understand the complexity of current environmental problems by recognizing the multiplicity of causes and consequences of major challenges to the natural environment. • To be able define and explain basic issues concerning the ability of the human community to interact in a sustainable manner with the environment in areas such as biodiversity, ecosystem services, habitat preservation, deforestation, conservation biology, nutrient cycling, and the impacts of climate change on living systems. • To understand the importance of a ‘systems approach’ in environmental science and to gain skill in applying this approach to contemporary environmental issues. • To critically evaluate scientific information derived from the life sciences and arrive at defensible assessments of its validity and applicability to improving environment qualities.
