Continuation of ENGL 1610. Survey of several genres of African American cultural production, including literary and oral forms. From the early 20th century to the present day, in such cultural contexts as the “new Negro” Renaissance and the civil rights and Black Power movements.
By the end of the term, students will be able: • To identify and discuss about major works of 20th and early 21st-century African American literature, across a variety of genres and periods • To identify and discuss the historical and cultural context of these works • To read literary texts closely, and with attention to language, form, and rhetoric • To write a cogent literary analysis of a select work or works from the course • To recite a poem by heart and to have gained worked both singly and in groups on basic oral communication skills
