The history of African American women’s labor, cultural expression, institution-building, activism, and strategies to combat oppression from the antebellum period through the late 20th century; the intersection of race, gender, and class as it has shaped U.S. society, racism, the black freedom movement, and African American women’s experiences. Includes a significant engagement in writing as a form of critical inquiry and scholarly expression to satisfy the WID requirement.
Students who complete this course successfully will: 1. gain a working understanding of the themes listed above and the complexity of the gendered and sexual aspects of African American history 2. learn to view U.S. history and questions of race from African American women’s perspectives 3. practice and improve their analytical thinking, reading, and writing skills
