Review of computer architecture fundamentals of performance and power; pipeline design and hazards; superscalar pipelines, speculation and recovery; fetch logic and instruction caches; branch prediction; decoder logic for CISC and RISC; scheduling and instruction issue; ALUs and register files; memory optimizations (scheduling, value prediction); commit logic.
As a result of completing this course, students will be able to:
1. know about the evolution and important milestones in high performance processors
2. have an in-depth understanding of latest processor micro-architectures
3. develop hands-on architecture simulator experience through a semester-long project
4. read and understand cutting edge research and technical papers in the field
