Layering, OSI, and Internet architectures. Link–layer protocols: PPP, HDLC, SONET. Cell-switching, ATM, and adaptation protocols. MAC layer protocols: Ethernet, 802.11. IP addressing, routing protocols: RIP, OSPF. Multi-domain routing: CIDR, BGP. End-to-end protocols: UDP, TCP. TCP congestion control. Application layer protocols: DNS, HTTP, SMTP, FTP.
At completion of this course, student will have received the following learning outcomes: • Knowledge and understanding: Understand principles and challenges of communications and computer networking protocols • Research skills: Independently search for and formulate new research problems. • Cognitive skills: Analyze and implement some basic network protocols. Evaluate their performances through mathematical modeling and/or simulation. • Communication skills: presentation skills.
