Structure and operation of a digital computer; design of computer arithmetic units, data and instruction paths; microprogramming; memory technology; virtual memory; caches; pipelined computer organization; characteristics of secondary storage; I/O interfacing.
At the end of the course, students should be able to:

(1) Know how to objectively compare computer architectures based on their performance and power consumption

(2) Design pipelines and caches that improve performance and power

(3) Think about cost considerations involved in parallelism versus performance
