Introduction to research-based academic writing for university-level graduate study; rhetorical awareness, working with academic sources, summary structure, the process of drafting and revising written work, grammatical accuracy, paraphrasing, source citation, and plagiarism prevention; academic skills development tasks target specific writing challenges faced by second language writers. Credit for this course does not apply toward any degree or certificate offered by GW.
By the end of the course, students will be able to accomplish the following research-specific objectives:

• Locate and evaluate academic sources
• Know how to properly cite sources in academic texts
• Understand the defining characteristics of plagiarism and the serious nature of ethics infractions involving plagiarism at GW
• Understand the entire process of research writing including pre-writing, planning, drafting, revising and editing
• Identify their audience
• Develop an objective academic perspective and style
• Summarize and paraphrase source materials
