Laboratory compnent of CHEM 2151. Introduction to and practice in basic skills of synthesis, separation, purification, and identification of organic compounds. CHEM 2151 may be taken as a corequisite. Laboratory fee.
Demonstrate proficiency in organic laboratory techniques, including procedures for the
separation, purification, and characterization of organic substances.
• Interpret experimental and spectroscopic observations and draw conclusions about the
outcomes.
• Summarize and explain experimental observations in a coherent laboratory notebook.
• Apply the techniques learned to a set of typical organic reactions; deduce (predict) the structure
of organic compounds utilizing chemical and spectroscopic methods.
• Calculate reaction yields and evaluate the relative success of reactions.
• Apply safe laboratory practices and proper chemical hygiene to all operations
