Cultural and political history of American capitalism from Wall Street to Whole Foods, including advertising, automation, baseball, Fordism, graffiti, housework, punk, real estate, strike-breaking, sex work, and slavery.
As a result of completing this course, and as per the G-PAC requirements for both critical thinking and for cross cultural perspective, students will be able to:
1) define “capitalism” in multiple ways and in everyday terms. (GPAC Critical Thinking)
2) give examples of how Americans have debated the merits of capitalism from the 1850s to the present. (GPAC Critical Thinking)
3) decode primary sources from the arts and social sciences for engagements with capitalism. (GPAC Critical Thinking)
4)record detailed notes during class and then compose succinct, clear summaries to share with peers. (GPAC Critical Thinking)
5) create a work of creative non-fiction that reflects on the form as well as the content of capitalism’s role in American life.
