Its principal goal is to give students a comprehensive understanding of what medicine as a whole is and may become, by examining how it has developed. This semester’s History of Medicine Elective will cover the following major topics: Disease, Diagnosis and Epidemics; Therapeutics in the 19th century; and Medicine and its technologies.
At the end of the course, students should be able to provide overviews of: the past and modern epidemics, the introduction of science-based cures in the 19th century and the historical roots of significant medical technologies and how these technologies changed medical practice.
