Contemporary Italian culture viewed through an examination of Italian cinema of the twenty-first century; diversity, immigration and integration; gender and sexuality; and the changes brought about by economic upheaval and the changing role of work. Taught in English.
This course will allow students to better understand contemporary Italy through the lens of recent cinematic production. At the end of the course, students will be able to: • Demonstrate broad understanding of contemporary Italian film and the new generation of directors. • Evaluate the varying interpretations of today’s Italy by different directors. • Synthesize themes that have emerged in Italian film over the last two decades. • Analyze issues regarding gender, religion, immigration and economic instability in contemporary Italian society according to various interpretative lens.
