Historical introduction to the industry of popular Hindi film known as Bollywood.
By the end of the course, students will: 1. be able to identify and interpret the basic formulaic elements of Bollywood melodramas; 2. be able to read individual texts in relation to larger generic paradigms; 3. be able to write effectively about film, with attention to story and textual details as well as to the visual field; 4. gain a deeper understanding of and respect for cultural traditions other than their own.
This course is unique in that it is the only introductory course in our department on Bollywood. (Though this is a non-wid version of the course)
