The structure of the Japanese language with focus on modern Japanese phonology, grammar, and pragmatics. Course is conducted in English.
Upon successfully completing this course, students should be able to: (a) identify and explain the core features of the structure of the Japanese language, e.g., morphological, syntactic, phonological, and discourse-related characteristics, that are either shared cross-linguistically or distinct from the languages students are familiar with; (b) understand and analyze some of the major issues in Japanese linguistics; (c) evaluate competing solutions to the issues; (d) apply basic analytical tools to analyze some Japanese linguistic data; (e) critically review some linguistic theories/hypotheses; (f) create a logical argument in presenting his/her own opinions in a concise and persuasive manner.
